How to Play Space Invaders
Space invaders like many of the games of its time is a simple 2D shooting game, making it easy to pick-up but hard to master – although you won’t need to keep putting quarters down with your own machine! The premise of the game is to stop aliens coming down and invading earth. The player takes on the role of a cannon shooting upward toward the invading aliens, dodging their oncoming attacks by manoeuvring behind blockades which are slowly being degraded with each attack from the alien invaders.
The player(s) must destroy all the aliens before they reach the surface of the earth. The aliens move toward the player(s), moving both horizontally and vertically. The game was traditionally played using joystick to move and a button to shoot.
History of Space Invaders
The original Space Invaders arcade game was released in Japan in 1978, created by Taito and developed by Tomohiro Nishikado. The wildly popular game was one of the first to find itself in what we now refer to as the shoot-em-up or ‘shmup’ genre of 2D arcade games. Nishikado’s inspiration for the game came from ‘The War of the Worlds’, ‘Star Wars' and a number of other pop culture icons. The game quickly grew in popularity and entered western markets, with Space Invaders becoming a staple in all good arcades.
